“… write passionately about things that matter” (pg. 4)

Comment (250-500 words)

I have always found myself to be a passionate writer. I have loved writing ever since I was a child and have grown up reading other people’s work along the way. The easiest “tell” to a bad paper is if you can’t find a sense of passion in the writing. You could write about the most important information ever, but without passion, you are lacking something in your writing that brings upon motivation and interest in others. Now, you can definitely write about your favorite pizza toppings with all the passion in the world and have many people disagree with you that it is an interesting topic, but also, there are many who might agree that it is something interesting they want to immerse themselves in. Importance is subjective, you must keep that in mind, but you lose importance if you aren’t bringing intrigue into the writing if you aren’t as enamored with the writing piece as your audience may want you to be.

I really appreciate what this post had to offer when it came to advice about writing. As he constructed the piece, he took his own advice and put it into his writing, and it really shows. He knew a lot about his topic and explained to the audience why he believes that these are important skills for the audience to learn, taking his first step very seriously. I liked the dropping of unexpected words like “sex” and “sexy” because they immediately grab the readers’ attention, especially if they are beginning to doze off in the middle of the piece. It is a great place for the audience to pick back up with their level of intrigue.

Question

Does credibility come into play when considering a text like this?

  • We all love good advice when it comes our way, but should we consider stopping for a second and question whether or not the advice is coming from a reliable source?
  • It is easy to see how his advice came together to write the article, but was all of the advice actually taken?
  • What is the author’s perspective? He may be at a different level than his audience and may fail to consider the writing level of others when he gives this advice.
