QCQ is short for “Quotation-Comment-Question.” It begins with a Quotation of 1-3 sentences. It then has a Comment. And it then asks a Question that encourages engagement from others. A good QCQ gives you something to bring to the table and offers something worth discussing in class. Earn full credit (1000 points) for a QCQ that touches all 3 bases – and is in on time.

Comment (250-500 words)

It is safe for me to say that reading this article shocked me. Growing up with social media is something that I will never not know. I got my first phone in 7th grade and have had one ever since. I personally own Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Tik Tok, and Yik Yak; all very popular forms of social media. I have had Instagram the longest.

Knowing so much about these apps, especially Instagram, hearing it has had a majority of positive impacts is something I did not believe before reading this article. If they had not presented data to back their claims, I would simply not have believed them.

I, and many other people I know, have struggled with body image issues, constantly talking about how they “haven’t eaten today… I really need to work out… I can’t eat that dessert…” or how they simply body check in the mirror constantly. I would say that Instagram has had an impact on this, whether people realize that or not. Continuously seeing thin, societally “body standard” individuals and models online subconsciously alters the frequency in which we compare ourselves to others. Whether people may realize it or not, apps such as Instagram have detrimental impacts on how we operate in life, allowing for a non-stop comparison of themselves to others.

If Instagram has only made you feel good about yourself, I am surely jealous. I would have loved for this article to discuss why people find Instagram helpful rather than hurtful (or even provide a link to an article that discusses this) because I simply cannot find a reason that it would beyond receiving kind comments on your posts.

Question

Has Instagram overall improved how you view yourself/your life? Or has it had no impact/ done the opposite?
